ABOUT STUDIO THEATRE

Studio Theatre is Washington’s premier venue for contemporary theatre, “where local audiences will find today’s edgiest playwrights” (Variety). Studio produces the work of today’s greatest writers, augmented by occasional productions of modern classics. Studio's work is marked by its emphasis on excellence in acting and design, and the signature intimacy of its four theatres, all of which seat fewer than 225 patrons. The quality of this work has been recognized over its 40-year history by sustained community support and 70 Helen Hayes Awards for excellence in professional theatre

THE OPPORTUNITY The Community Engagement Manager will oversee, coordinate, and manage Studio’s engagement, education, and workforce development programs. As the key point of contact for Studio’s outreach with the community, they will maintain relationships with all our community partners as well as with the DC Collaborative and local DC public schools (with whom we partner for our Student Matinee program). Reporting to the Associate Artistic Director, the Community Engagement Manager will also work cross-departmentally to help connect the work on our stages to the broader community by supporting public programming, developing show-specific partnerships, and increasing awareness of accessibility opportunities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

ENGAGEMENT

● Maintain and deepen relationships with Studio’s core community partners

● Engage internal and external constituents (e.g. staff, board, artists, and community partners) about the on- and off-stage work happening at Studio

● Evaluate, enhance, and expand Studio’s community partnership program by 1) identifying additional, tangible partner benefits (currently, space rental and ticket donation); 2) building the next tiers of partnerships; and 3) working with senior leadership to create institutional buy-in for these partnerships

● Identify and curate show-specific partnerships with organizations whose missions align with production themes

● Coordinate Studio’s Ward Nights, our ticket program in collaboration with DC Councilmembers that distributes free tickets for constituents across all eight DC wards

● Assist Studio’s Literary Department in public programming, including postshow conversations with artists and actors

● Collaborate with Front of House and Audience Services to review and improve our accessibility initiatives

● Coordinate with Marketing and Audience Services to enhance discount ticket strategies that support and expand Studio’s audiences (e.g. free or discounted tickets for students, seniors, and veterans)

EDUCATION

● Manage the Student Matinee program, through which Studio hosts 400+ DC public and charter high school students for dedicated matinee performances

● Work with the DC Collaborative to coordinate outreach and logistical coordination

● Collaborate with Studio’s artistic staff to develop the study guide and program materials for post-show programming

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

● Oversee Studio's Apprenticeship Program, a 50-week full-time program for 14 earlycareer arts professionals.

● Manager will oversee program logistics, lead onboarding and orientation for the apprentices, plan educational seminars throughout the year

● Work with Studio's general management team to coordinate apprentice evaluations and HR needs.

● Alongside the apprentice program, the manager will oversee all workplace development programs at Studio, including the internship program which welcomes 30-35 interns across three seasons: fall, spring, and summer interns, as well as help mold future workforce training initiatives.

Studio Theatre seeks an individual dedicated to community building and education, with a passion for mission-driven work. The ideal candidate will have exceptional communication and relationship building skills, a demonstrated interest in developing early career professionals, and a strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Preferred qualifications include:

● A college degree or high school diploma and two years of experience working in a not-for-profit setting

● Experience with community outreach and engagement; experience with education programming a plus

● Experience with recruitment ● Strong written and verbal communications skills
