Literary Manager, Oregon Shakespeare Festival

The Literary Manager acts as an essential artistic advisor and collaborator to both the Artistic Director and the Director of Literary Development and Dramaturgy regarding season selection, commissioning and developing new work, and project management for a variety of literary and cross-departmental initiatives. The position manages the organization and implementation of the administrative responsibilities of Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s Literary Office while maintaining effective relationships with multiple internal and external contacts including the Artistic Office, Education, Marketing and Communications, Audience Development, Production, the Business Office, Development, and Support Services.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions**): 

1. Advise the Artistic Director and Director of Literary Development and Dramaturgy in season play selection by reading, researching, scouting, and recommending individual scripts and season models. 

2. Manage all logistics for Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s season selection process including meeting arrangements, correspondence with the Boarshead season selection committee, and script and music acquisition and distribution. 

3. Oversee the management of the Literary Office in concert with Director of Literary Development and Dramaturgy, including new play commissioning and development, grant administration, budgeting, and line producing, and designing and proposing new Literary office policies and practices. 

4. Maintain and regularly update the Literary office script and music library and playwright database in concert with new work being produced globally. 

5. On occasion when requested by the Director of Literary Development and Dramaturgy, provide notes and dramaturgical feedback to the Senior Artistic staff for rehearsal hall runs, dress rehearsals, and preview performances. 

6. Manage special literary office guest travel and itineraries (i.e. playwrights, dramaturgs, textual consultants, authors, executors or trustees of author or playwright estate) and act as concierge during their time at the Festival. 

7. In collaboration with Production Script Coordinator, create an annual timeline to track script formatting and distribution from season selection through first rehearsal; format, proof, edit, and distribute scripts and annotations for productions; create side-by-side references for productions; prepare scripts for open-captioning and sign-interpreted performances; coordinate scripts for publication at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Tudor Guild; photocopy scripts and other materials as needed for readings, workshops, and rehearsals; and track Final Draft license agreements. 

8. Collaborate with Education-Engagement staff on Living Ideas programming and provide dramaturgical support for curriculum development.

9. Collaborate with Publications editorial team to design and edit OSF publications such as Illuminations, Prologue, and the Member’s Lounge Notebooks.

Education: B.F.A, M.A., or M.F.A. in Dramaturgy, Artistic or Creative Producing, Dramatic Literature or related field, or commensurate experience. Work Experience: Minimum 3-5 years professional experience in Dramaturgy and Literary Management 

Qualifications: Background in, and detailed knowledge of theatre practices and dramatic literature across the globe, is required. Individual must demonstrate a high level of writing, proof-reading, editing, and communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) and Final Draft.
