Janine Sobeck Knighton is the Dramaturgy Specialist at Brigham Young University, where she teaches, supervises and works as a production dramaturg. She is also a freelance dramaturg, and has worked with theatres such as The Kennedy Center and Pioneer Theatre Company.
Previously, Janine worked as the Artistic Associate: Literary at Arena Stage in Washington DC. While at Arena she created “Sub/Text,” (now called "Extras and Insights") an extensive dramaturgical website for audience members (http://www.arenastage.org/artistic-development/extras-insights/), dramaturged various shows, was the Producer of the Downstairs New Play Development Program, and served as a judge for DC's Helen Hayes Awards.
Janine is currently the Vice President of Public Relations for the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas (LMDA). During her time on the Executive Board, Janine has played a key role in designing the new LMDA website and has been a member of the National New Play Network’s Core Development Committee, working to create and design the New Play Exchange.
Janine has an M.F.A. in Dramatic Writing from the University of Idaho and an M.A. in Theatre History Theory and Criticism from Brigham Young University. She was the recipient of the 2009 Dramaturgy Debut Award for the Association for Theatre in Higher Education.
