The Iowa City Press-Citizen/press-citizen.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for an ambitious, curious, well-read and skilled writer for the Iowa City Press-Citizen’s arts/entertainment and culture beat.
Because Iowa City is home to a world class Big 10 university as well as active and thriving literature/visual arts/performing arts/music and dining scenes, this beat is of critical importance to the paper and one with boundless opportunity for an enterprising reporter.
In the arena of art and literature, Iowa city is home to the prestigious Iowa Writers’ Workshop and is one of only 28 UNESCO Cities of Literature on the planet and only 1 of 2 in the U.S. Many respected authors reside in Iowa City, along with artists of many mediums, since Iowa City is considered a haven for artists.
For entertainment, numerous organizations offer up a regular rotation of musical, comedy and film events. Mission Creek Festival, an arts festival that happens each April, has also become a draw for people across the Midwest and country.
For dining, downtown Iowa City and the surrounding area is home to an ever-changing series of restaurants. Some are beloved, longstanding family favorites like Paglia’s and Hamburg Inn No. 2, others are fine dining destinations. It’s a mix of new and old, which gives the scene diversity. Being close to so much farm land, there’s opportunity for chefs to fully embrace farm-to-table cooking.
The beat requires keeping on top of all the above. That means the reporter must know what stories are the most compelling and will have the biggest impact to our audience.
This beat reporter will be asked to turn well-researched, in-depth enterprise stories on these various scenes as well as new business features as well as writing for the weekly entertainment section GO.
The ideal candidate will have:
Bachelor’s or master’s in journalism, communication or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
2-3 years reporting/newsroom experience – college or professional – ideally covering arts/entertainment/music/culture/dining or a combination thereof.
Ability to write quickly and cleanly on deadline while simultaneously working on enterprise stories.
Comfort using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat to enhance reporting and promote stories.
A desire to grow and develop a key beat in our newsroom.
This role requires a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
