Jane Barnette, a Dramaturg teaching in the Department of Theatre at the University of Kansas, is a theatre historian who does archival research on train culture and American pageantry. She has published reviews and articles in Theatre Journal, Theatre Symposium, Review, and TPQ. A passionate advocate for adaptation dramaturgy as well as space- and place-based dramaturgical thinking, Barnette is also one of two Plains Regional Vice-Presidents for the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of America (LMDA). Barnette does freelance dramaturgy as her schedule allows; recent projects include the development of Mami Confessions, Lorraine Reyes's award-winning one-woman show about motherhood, McCraney's Marcus; or the Secret of Sweet, directed by Karen Robinson at Actor's Express in Atlanta, George Brant's Elephant's Graveyard at Auburn University, directed by Chase Bringardner and Georgia Shakespeare's original adaptation The Odyssey: A Journey Home, directed by Richard Garner. In 2013-14, Barnette partnered with Michael Haverty (of The Object Group) to co-create and co-direct their original adaptation of The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane, produced at KSU as well as 7 Stages (a professional theatre in Atlanta). Barnette guest-directed Red Badge of Courage at Auburn University in their new black box theatre in March 2015.
