Biography
Katherine Syer taught for many years in the School of Music at UIUC. Since 2016 she is Associate Professor of Theatre and currently serves as the Director of Graduate Studies for the Theatre Department. Several of Syer’s publications explore the dramatic art of Richard Wagner. Her research and teaching focus on theatre and opera, with current projects highlighting contemporary practices.
Syer served as artistic advisor for Moisés Kaufman’s play 33 Variations, which premiered at the Arena Stage (Washington, D.C.) and reached Broadway in 2009, after its final workshop at UIUC. She has worked as dramaturg for stage works at KCPA and is supporting the development of a new production at the Canadian Opera Company which will open January 2020. The recipient of a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Society (2007-8 and 2009-10), she has been affiliated with the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Syer was a guest professor 2016-17 at the University for Music and Art (MUK) in Vienna.
